The thought of being tied up and hit with a leather crop initially squashed my interest in reading Fifty Shades of Grey. However, when hardware stores in New York City reported an increase in rope sales propelled by this best seller, curiosity eventually won out. Yes, it was an entertaining mindless read, but for all the wrong reasons. When Anastasia the protagonist was tied to the bed, it just didn’t stir me the way I had hoped. Comments like: “Holy cow, I cannot move my arms”, and “Pulling off his boxers, his erection springs free”, conjured up some pretty humorous visuals; more like a comic strip than a sensual novel.
In search for a good sex read, my brainiac friend Laura suggested Delta of Venus by Anaïs Nin, the first woman author to pen erotica leading up to the feminist movement of the 60s. This book of 15 short stories was written for a private “collector” at $1 a page when Nin was a struggling writer in the 1940s. Delta of Venus was never meant for mainstream consumption, and was only published after her passing in 1977. Although Delta of Venus was definitely an improvement over Fifty Shades of Grey it also left me COLD versus the preferred HOT. Buried in her erotic prose, Nin wrote, “sex without love lacks color.” Do you think she was trying to send her patron of the arts a message?
If bondage in the bedroom leaves you COLD, there’s always fun in the kitchen. Check out Fifty Shades of Chicken for a collection of tantalizing recipes including HOT Rubbed Hen to Chicken with a Lard-on (bacon). Unlike Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades of Chicken will make you hungry for more.
