Italians understand that a love of shoes is part of a woman’s DNA. As a toddler, our daughter Margot would crawl under restaurant tables, taking inventory of fellow patrons’ footwear. Over a decade later, her penchant for shoes was fueled in Positano, Italy, where we had a mother daughter adventure in a shoe shopping mecca.
We happened upon one of the many local merchants catering to a woman’s deepest desire. Ernesto, the handsome third generation proprietor of Artigianato Rallo, pointed to rows of sandal designs, one of which his grandfather crafted for Jackie Kennedy Onassis in 6 colors. In melodically spoken English, Ernesto explained that he would custom fit sandals by mixing and matching from the various leather colors and textures, and a vast array of shoe bling. With the help of Ernesto’s mama, Margot settled on green and brown sandals, sans glitz. Within 15 minutes at the cobbler’s bench, Ernesto produced custom sized peds right down to adjusting the toe straps.
When it comes to women and shoes, I Love You Always prevails.
Footwear is an authentic form of self expression and always fits. Zappos.com, the monster on line shoe retailer, promises to “Deliver Happiness” with every order. Ernesto delivered happiness with an Italian accent. It was the perfect date.
